1945 – Establishment of the Technical University by the Council of Ministers Decree of 24 May 1945
1945 – Establishment of the Chair of Mathematics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, successive Chairs: Prof. Witold Pogorzelski, Prof. Zygmunt Charzyński, Prof. Lucjan Siewierski.
1945 – Establishment of the Chair of Mathematics at the Faculty of Chemistry, successive Chairs: Prof. Edward Otto, Prof. Witold Janowski, Prof. Włodzimierz Krysicki.
1954–1957 only one Chair of Mathematics for the whole Technical University
1961 – Honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Łódź conferred upon Professor Witold Pogorzelski.
1968 – Establishment of the Chair of Mathematics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Chair: Docent (Associated Professor) Danuta Sadowska.
1968 – TV lectures for part-time students of TUŁ; the course convenor: Prof. Włodzimierz Krysicki, the team of lecturers: Prof. Izydor Dziubiński, Prof. Danuta Sadowskia, Prof. Tadeusz Świątkowski, Prof. Lech Włodarski. The course ran until 1972.
1970 – Establishment of the Institute of Mathematics. The successive Directors were: Prof. Izydor Dziubiński, Prof. Tadeusz Świątkowski, Prof. Izydor Dziubiński, Prof. Lesław Gajek, Prof. Marek Balcerzak, Associate Professor Tadeusz Poreda, Professor Piotr Liczberski, Associate Professor Grzegorz Andrzejczak; the current Director is Associate Professor Katarzyna Szymańska-Dębowska. The position of the Deputy Director was held by: Prof. Lucjan Siewierski, Prof. Tadeusz Świątkowski, Prof. Izydor Dziubiński, Prof. Edward Kącki, Docent Tadeusz Śródka, Associate Professor Tadeusz Poreda, Dr Jan Maciulewicz, Prof. Lesław Gajek, Dr Bogdan Koszela, Prof. Marek Balcerzak, Prof. Jacek Jachymski, Prof. B. Przeradzki; currently the positions are held by - Prof. Lesław Gajek (Development), Dr Artur Wachowicz (Teaching), Mr. Sławomir Tarkowski (Administration).
1972 – The Technical University of Łódź commences publishing the Mathematics series of the Scientific Bulletin; 27 issues had appeared before the series begun to be published as Journal of Applied Analysis in 1995. The successive Editors in Chief were: Prof. Izydor Dziubiński, Prof. Jan Matkowski, Prof. Lesław Gajek.
1973 – The Institute of Mathematics is awarded the right to confer doctoral degrees in mathematics. Until 1988, 70 PhD was successfully completed.
1975 – Establishment of the specialization Applied Mathematics within the programme of the Fundamental Technological Problems at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
1976 – Establishment of the Faculty of Technical Physics and Applied Mathematics. The duration of studies was 4.5 years and, upon completion, the students received the degree of Master of Engineering in Fundamental Technological Research with specialization in Applied Mathematics.
1979 – The first graduation of students in the Faculty. The number one Diploma of the Master of Engineering in Fundamental Technological Research with specialization in Applied Mathematics is awarded to Lesław Gajek, who today is a Professor of Mathematics.
1985 – Honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Łódź is conferred upon Professor Zygmunt Charzyński.
1991 – Establishment of the specialization Mathematics (over 800 graduates since then).
1994 – Extension of the Faculty to include the Institute of Computer Science. Since then the name of the Faculty has been the Faculty of Technical Physics, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (abbreviated as FTIMS from the Polish names of the institutes).
1995 – Honorary doctorate is conferred upon Professor Włodzimierz Krysicki.
1995 – Establishment of Journal of Applied Analysis on the basis of the Scientific Bulletin of TUŁ (series Mathematics). The journal was published jointly with Heldermann Verlag from 1997 till 2010 and, since 2010, with the Walter de Gruyter publishing house.
1997 – Establishment of the specialization Insurance and Financial Mathematics (450 graduates since then).
1998 – The Faculty regains the right to confer the PhD degree in mathematics; since then, 40 degrees have been awarded.
2000 – Implementation of the ECTS credit system by the Faculty.
2004 – Restructuring of the Faculty and creation of the specialized inter-faculty Teaching Centre of Mathematics and Physics.
2006 – David Garrick Prize (in the field of actuarial science) awarded to Prof. Lesław Gajek
2007 – Transition to the two-cycle structure of the university education (the so-called Bologna model). Specializations at the first cycle (BSc): Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, Mathematical Modelling, Mathematical Methods of Analysis of Business Data, Mathematics with Applications.
2008 – Participation in the Operational Programme: Human Capital with the trial run of the commissioned studies for BSc in mathematics.
2010 – Commencement of the second cycle. Specializations: Risk Management in Finance and Insurance, Mathematical Modelling and Optimization, Data Analysis in Business and Logistics, Mathematics with Applications.
2010 – The project "Mathematics is the best capital of a graduate" receives funding from the Human Capital Operational Programme (studies of the second cycle (MSc) in mathematics, three times).
2011 – The project "Mathematics – the leverage of the innovative economy" receives funding from the Human Capital Operational Programme (first cycle (BSc) in mathematics, two times).
2011 – Achieved the minimum staff complement needed to apply for rights to confer DSc (habilitation) in mathematical sciences (mathematics).
2011 – The Rector of TUŁ, by the Decree of 14.11.2011, has established the Postgraduate School at the Faculty: "PhD studies – Science in Technology."
The Great Departed
Professor Jan Kubarski (1950–2013)
A long-time employee of the Institute of Mathematics of the Technical University of Łódź, professor of mathematical sciences, a renowned specialist in the field of differential geometry, respected scientist and university teacher, a former Vice-Dean of the Faculty, awardee of the Silver Cross of Merit.
Professor Włodzimierz Krysicki (1905–2001)
Born on the 1st of January 1905 in Warsaw. A senior Polish mathematician, Professor and Honorary Doctor of the Technical University of Łódź. He was a teacher of several generations of Polish mathematicians and the author of several academic books, including "Problems in Mathematical Analysis" which has had 29 editions and was translated into English and German. He wrote numerous books popularizing mathematics, such as "Secrets of numbers", "How did we count in the past and how do we count today?", "Xs and Ys". He died on the 19th of September 2001 in Łódź.
Professor Tadeusz Świątkowski (1933–1994)
Tadeusz Świątkowski was born on 28th of November 1933 in Bełchatów. In 1951 he enrolled as a student of mathematics at the University of Łódź and graduated there in 1955. Already a year before he started working as an assistant (junior lecturer) at the Technical University of Łódź. In the period 1959 - 1962 he worked at the University of Łódź before returning to the Technical University of Łódź. In 1960 he was awarded a PhD in mathematics, DSc (habilitation) in 1966 and the State title of Professor in 1978. During his scientific career, between 1959 and 1994, Professor Świątkowski published more than 30 research papers. One of the greatest results of Professor Świątkowski was the monotonicity theorem, contained in his habilitation dissertation. However, his scientific achievements cannot be measured by publications alone. Many of his ideas were shared with his students and are scattered in their works; only they know how much they owe to his ingenuity, humility and kindness. Professor Świątkowski successfully supervised 40 PhDs in mathematics. He was the Director of the Institute of Mathematics of Technical University of Łódź and received many state awards. He died prematurely on 30th of October 1994 in Lodz.
Professor Lucjan Siewierski (1915–2004)
He was born on the 2nd of August 1915 in Chicago, USA. In 1922 he arrived with his family in Poland and settled in Łódź. In 1938 he completes the studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Warsaw but receives the degree of Master of Philosophy in Mathematics only in 1946 (the eight years? delay was caused by the military service and the war). In 1945 he took a job as a teacher in the Municipal Secondary School in Lodz (now the High School No 3 named after T. Kościuszko). From 1949 he worked at the Technical University of Łódź, moving up the academic ranks. He received PhD in 1958 and DSc (habilitation) in 1961, both from the Faculty Board of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the University of Łódź. The State title of Professor was conferred upon him by the Council of State in 1969. Prof. A. Bielecki from the Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin, in the assessment of the professorial application of Professor Siewierski wrote: "Docent Lucjan Siewierski in his habilitation dissertation obtained a result considered to be the best achievement of the Łódź School of Analytical Functions" (solution of the conjecture of Charzyński and Tamm about the coefficients of bounded univalent functions which are close to identity). Professor Lucjan Siewierski was a friend of the youth . His pupils and students always referred to him as "our professor Lucek". Professor Siewierski is the author of 10 scientific articles, a co-author of six books and scripts. He supervised two PhD students and was an external examiner of eight doctoral theses. He received many state awards. For many years he served as a Deputy Director (Research) of the Institute of Mathematics.
